North Hollywood High ties for eighth place in Science Bowl

North Hollywood High School tied for eighth place in the 2011 U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl this weekend, maintaining a tradition of high finishes in the competition.

The school competed in Washington, D.C., against 100 teams from 44 states for the 21st annual science competition which tests young students on math and science, in a "Jeopardy"-like showdown.

North Hollywood has earned a reputation for excellence in the elite science contest, having won the regional title all but one year since 1998. It also won a national title in 2001 and has landed among the top 10 schools several years in a row.

Despite not winning the national title this time, the students earned $1,000 for their school. The team members had already earned $1,000 scholarships each, and $2,500 for the school after winning the 19th annual Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Science Bowl in late February.

"We're very proud of the success of these young people and of how well they represented Los Angeles, said Walter Zeisl, a DWP spokesman who accompanied the students in Washington.

At the awards ceremony on Monday, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu spoke to the more than 500 students and 100 team coaches about the significance of science education to the future of the country.

"These students represent the great promise and potential of America's next great generation," Chu said.

"America's future will always be bright

when we continue to invest in and support the young minds who will be tomorrow's innovators, pioneers and leaders. That's what the science bowl is all about."

Mira Loma High School in Sacramento, won the high school national championship match and Gale Ranch Middle School in San Ramon won the middle school contest.
