At last month's Cannes Film Festival, it was announced that Gosling would be directing himself in 'The Idolmaker,' but it is now being reported that he has backed out of the project altogether, due to his busy schedule.
It certainly does seem the 'Drive' star has a lot on his plate. 'Crazy Stupid Love,' which comes out next month, George Clooney's 'The Ides of March,' a remake of 'Logan's Run' and a reunion with 'Blue Valentine' director Derek Cianfrance in 'The Place Beyond the Pines' are all slated within the next year.
Perhaps that isn't the best time to give directing a shot. As ecstatic as we are to see Gosling getting his due, we're awfully interested to see how his directing chops measure up to his status as one of the better up-and-coming leading men.
A remake of the 1980 Taylor Hackford?directed film of the same name, 'The Idolmaker' is the true story of rock promoter and producer Bob Marcucci, who discovered teen idols Frankie Avalon and Fabian. It looks like MGM is still going full steam ahead on the production, just no word yet on who's going to take Gosling's place.
