? A victor is named tonight on The Voice (NBC, 8 ET/PT). Congratulations to the winner, and to NBC for finding a bit of success. Let's hope the network uses that success to launch something better.
? One of the many reasons to love The Middle (ABC, 8:30 ET/PT), and to hope Emmy voters throw a little love its way, is the way it takes familiar family-show themes and freshens them with new twists.
Tonight, Axl wants to get out of going to the prom (he tweeted the wrong girl), and Brick wants his parents to watch his one-man plays ? plots you could imagine on Leave It to Beaver, minus the tweeting.
But on Beaver, Wally would have ultimately been happily compliant and Beaver would have learned a lesson about hogging his parent's attention.
Here, Axl resists, much to his parents' horror. ("I didn't know my own son was a jerk." "Well, that's where you're wrong.") And while Brick does learn a lesson, it's not quite the one you might expect.
Yet for all the comic exaggerations, there's hardly a moment some parent won't recognize as true.
