Los Angeles Unified officials Tuesday forged ahead with plans to expand vegetarian options and ban flavored milk to make student meals healthier.
"This is part of a concerted effort to improve the choices and quality of the foods our youth are getting," said LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy.
LAUSD officials approved two new contracts for dairy products, which no longer include strawberry or chocolate milk.
The school board also approved a $50 million contract for the next five years to provide more meat-free options including sophisticated dishes like creole chickpea stew, California sushi rolls and hummus with veggie chips.
The vegetarian meal contract, with Ontario-based Five Star Gourmet Foods, was approved unanimously. Board member Tamar Galatzan voted against the dairy contract, citing concerns about how it would affect kids' milk consumption.
"The American Association of Pediatrics, American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics have all issued statements in support of flavored milk," Galatzan said.
Galatzan also said she was concerned about what prompted the ban. Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has stressed in his television reality show "Food Revolution" that the district should ban flavored milk. Oliver also attempted for months to gain access to LAUSD schools to produce his show, centered on overhauling school meal programs, and was denied by former Superintendent Ramon Cortines.
Deasy,
however, gave Oliver access shortly after he took over from Cortines and later announced his decision to ban flavored milk."I don't know why we are letting a TV chef dictate our policy," Galatzan said.
