Former White Stripes mastermind Jack White played a surprise two-song set at the launch of his Third Man Rolling Record Store at SXSW in Austin yesterday.Setting up in the corner of a parking lot, White and his Third Man crew -- including former Soledad Brothers drummer Ben 'Swank' Smith -- declared the opening of their roving record store (it's a big yellow truck) by setting up a microphone and small amp in front of a hundred or so lucky fans.
After a short introduction by Swank, White emerged with a white acoustic guitar to wild applause and proceeded to play a mini set comprised of Bo Diddley track 'Not Fade Away' (which White introduced as a Texas tune) and the White Stripes hit 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground.'
The inclusion of the latter marks the first time White has played a White Stripes song since the duo announced their split.
Watched by Dead Weather bandmate Alison Mosshart and her Kills partner Jamie Hince, White seemed genuinely enthused to showcase his newest rolling innovation.
Newly signed Third Man recording artist Seasick Steve followed up, but was cut off when the parking lot attendant threw a hissy fit at White and co. for disrupting his cash flow.
