Growing up, John C. Reilly never expected to be in Hollywood.
"I just saw movies as these bigger-than-life things, and the way actors were onscreen, I just thought that was the way they were," says the Chicago native. But with a face that would best be described as a mug, the 46-year-old actor has appeared in more than 40 movies - big films, small ones, dramas and comedies - and has worked with some of the best directors in the business.
On Friday, he opened in "Terri," an indie film about an overweight teen, Terri (Jacob Wysocki), who lives with his uncle, who shows early signs of dementia. Reilly plays vice principal Mr. Fitzgerald, who takes a personal interest in helping the kids at the school who are "different."
The actor says he was attracted to the role because of the journey the character takes.
"He begins as this confident authority figure who has the world all figured out and then the more time you spend with him, the more you realize that he's a guy who's actually becoming unglued a little bit and he starts to question what life is all about."
If you look at Reilly's resume, you would think that he is much like his character.
In 2003, he achieved a first in Oscar history by having featured roles in three of the five films nominated for best picture. He was Julianne Moore's husband in "The Hours," a corrupt policeman in Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York" and Renee Zellweger's sappy husband in "Chicago,"
for which he received an Academy Award nomination as best supporting actor. Yet Reilly says that while the kids working on "Terri" may have thought he knew it all, the veteran actor isn't so assured."I never really feel like an expert," says the actor. "It's a nerve-racking business. I wish I really did feel confident and laid-back about it all. That's just not the case."
The fifth of sixth children, Reilly started taking acting classes when he was 8 or 9 at a nearby park in his hometown.
"As a kid, it was so empowering," he says. "The first time I went to this drama class we made up stuff and suddenly that was our show."
While actors were never role models - that was his dad - one of the actors Reilly admired growing up was Gene Wilder. "I really liked him because he was funny. He had intensity. He had a compassionate quality about him that was different than the other macho kind of male role models of the time. There are not many people like that."
It could be argued that Reilly has had that type of diverse career himself. As a youth he performed in a lot of musicals - "Fiddler on the Roof," "Guys and Dolls," "Jesus Christ Superstar" - and he is known for his poignant number, "Mr. Cellophane," in the film "Chicago."
"I get a lot of happiness out of the singing and playing music," says Reilly, who did the parody biopic "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," about the wild career of a country-rock star. The actor occasionally performs around town, singing and playing guitar and covering mostly traditional, roots and country music.
Though Reilly went to drama school at DePaul University in Chicago, it wasn't until he nearly graduated that he started calling himself an actor. It took the casting of another actor from his neighborhood (Kevin J. O'Connor in Francis Ford Coppola's "Peggy Sue Got Married") that allowed him to believe he could end up in a Hollywood movie.
"I couldn't believe it could be possible until I had a concrete example of somebody I knew making it. It was really inspiring."
When he was 22, Brian De Palma cast him in the 1988 Vietnam drama "Casualties of War." It was a small part, eventually expanded, and he got to take his first plane ride. Reilly has been working steadily ever since in films as varied as "The Aviator," "Boogie Nights," "A Prairie Home Companion," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and "Step Brothers."
He also met his future wife, Alison Dickey, who is a producer on "Terri." The couple have two children, but Reilly is fiercely protective of them and doesn't talk about his family.
From a script by Patrick deWitt, "Terri" is directed by Azazel Jacobs. "I like Azazel because he's very patient with letting you reveal the character," says Reilly. "He's not pushing some agenda. He's just trying to give you a sense of peace and space. He has a lot of compassion as a human being."
Reilly says that in Hollywood a director will say one thing in a meeting and then it will be different on a set. "Some people make movies because they're ambitious people," he says. "With somebody like Azazel, the whole thing to him is art. Hopefully, there is a way he can sell that, but it's nice to work with somebody who's first commitment is to truth and honesty and good storytelling."
Reilly, who has signed on for a cameo in Sacha Baron Cohen's "The Dictator," has two highly anticipated films due this year - the Cannes Film Festival sensation "We Need to Talk About Kevin" and "Carnage."
In "Kevin," from Lionel Shriver's controversial novel, he and Tilda Swinton play the parents of a schoolboy responsible for a Columbine-style rampage at a high school. "Carnage" is Roman Polanski's adaptation of Yasmina Reza's Tony Award-winning play "God of Carnage," which also stars Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster and Christoph Waltz.
Reilly also recently finished shooting the comedy "Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie." (Fans are familiar with his Dr. Steve Brule character - a loopy TV correspondent - from a number of videos available on the Internet.)
Reilly says when he was studying acting in college people always said "real acting" was dramatic acting. On the other hand, he had been in lots of musicals and comedies before then.
"I remember when I did `Talladega Nights,' people were like, `Who knew that John C. Reilly could be funny?' But I felt like there were a lot of funny scenes in `Boogie Nights,"' he says. "Everyone's always surprised by your secrets except you."

Fresh off of performing at the Mandalay Bay Resort Event Center, Rihanna headed over to the Tropicana Hotel to host an afterparty at Club Nikki on Saturday night (July 2).
The Barbadian beauty was clad in an emerald green dress as she arrived at around 2:30AM, tweeting on her way to the Sin City hotspot, "Nikki Beach bout to be JUMPIN'!!!! Here I come..."
Once inside, RiRi grabbed herself a beverage as she mingled with guests including rocker Travis Barker and UFC fighter Dominick Cruz, who was toting around his championship belt after beating Urijah Faber in a contest at MGM Grand earlier the same night.
Meanwhile, a new report from TMZ adds a little credence to the rumors that Rihanna is, indeed, dating Canadian rapper Drake - as they obtained a photo of the pair getting cozy at the Buonanotte Supperclub in Montreal on June 12th.
The TMZ source dished that the "What's My Name?" hitmakers were "all over each other" the whole night, adding that they were "making out" in front of fellow patrons.

Good friends Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale played together on the beach in Malibu, CA today. It's Ashley's 26th birthday, which she celebrated by basking in the sunshine sporting a sexy bikini with her pals, including High School Musical costar Zac. The two have been close for years, though her BFF and his ex Vanessa Hudgens wasn't spotted partaking in the party. Ashley did get a piggyback ride from muscle-bound Zac, who showed off his shirtless physique. Zac Efron also supported Ashley Tisdale at the premiere of her latest DVD release earlier in the Spring and they both had downtime to enjoy the long holiday weekend and the big 2-6 for Ashley.

If the subtextual homoerotic love affair between Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Professor X (James McAvoy) in the X-Men saga wasn't established canon beforeX-Men: First Class, well...it is now.
For anyone remotely paying attention, it's pretty clear that the primary story arc of the summer blockbuster is how much Erik and Charles are madly in love, and how it all goes horribly wrong due to a combination of external forces and internal character flaws.
Our own E! Online reviewer appeared to have no idea this all went down, so are we just seeing things because we want to? And what does this turn of romantic events mean for the future of the franchise? Let's discuss:
READ MORE: What were the five biggest movie letdowns of the summer?
Xavier's X-Men and Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants have long representedconflicting approaches to race relations in America, withXavier standing for a conciliatory integrationist Martin Luther King Jr.approach, and Magneto taking a more militant or separatistMalcolm Xapproach.
But circa 2011, cultural divisions over race have been supplanted in the popular American consciousness by a debate over gay rights, and the latest X-Men film has updated Professor X and Magneto's adversarial relationship thusly. Sure, a lot of stuff blows up, so it's partly just a summer popcorn movie. But the film can also be easily read as a gay pride allegory, as well as a story of true love gone horribly wrong.(Among other things, by the end ofFirst Class, Professor X affirmatively chooses to stay in the closet and not frighten the straights, while "mutant and proud" Magneto embraces the "drag" of a flamboyant costume.)
Now, about that sexual business in the storyline of the film.Don't fight it, folks. It's there, and it's real, and even James McAvoy is in on it.He told theDaily Telegraph, "It is a little bit of a mini-tragedy that him and Magneto don't, you know, have sex and become married and become best friends."
To double-check our level of crazy fangirling on this topic, we turned to William Earnest, an assistant professor of communication at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, who contributed a chapter called "MakingGaySense of theX-Men" to the textbook Uncovering Hidden Rhetorics: Social Issues in Disguiseedited by Barry S. Brummett. He says, "I think the movie would be less interesting, and much less fun, without [the romantic throughline]. I'm not sure, however, that the majority of moviegoers necessarily recognize the gay love affair, coded as it is, but I do think they'd notice its absence. The late, great Vito Russo (The Celluloid Closet) would probably agree with this assertion, seeing as he found these kinds of coded gay relationships informing so many mainstream films over the decades."
So, if youareinclined to read the film this way (and we so are), what is there to see?
The two leads ofX-Men: First Classmeet cute when Charles Xavier saves Erik Lehnsherr from drowning during a revengey assault on a evil overlord's yacht, and in their first exchange Erik confesses, "I thought I was alone," while Charles reassures, "No, you're not?I'm like you." Sure, they'reofficiallytalking about the whole mutant thing, but the language also transfers perfectly to what two closeted malesin the 1960smight say to each other as they experienced the gaydar ping of their lives.
Shortly thereafter, Erik and Charles set off to adopt a brood of X-babies they can raise at Xavier's mansion, during which Hugh Jackman's Wolverine makes a brief cameo appearance and encourages the future superhero and supervillain to "go f--k yourselves." Sure, you could say that the line is simply Wolverine being his usual bitchy self, but we say the line was planted to hint that Charles and Erik then quite literally go f--k each other.
Throughout the second act of the film, not only do the two share a bed in a strip club, share a mind meld so powerful they're both brought to tears, andco-parent the X-babiesin preparation for the battle against Shaw (Kevin Bacon), they somehow find time to loll around together on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial while "playing chess" and gazing at the oh-so-phallic Washington Monument. No, seriously, "playing chess" is obviously PG-13 movie code for "And then Magneto and Professor X did it...again."
Professor Earnest also notes, "With this not-always-subtle subtext established, finding ways to play with it is easy?a task made even easier by the fact that it's homoerotic, not homosexualin the literal sense, so it's about desire, tension, and, above all, unrequited love. No clothes have to come off, and so far as we know, they don't. But there are looks, body language, conversations, and above all,intimacy...The chess scene aside, from the standpoint of sexual imagery, I think the 'satellite dish' [scene] is the film's richest. Charles even asks Erik's permission to penetrate him! So polite. And then they meld each other's brains out."
Of course, in the tradition of all the best romantic tragedies, by the third act our heroes end up facing off in the climactic final battle, and their fundamental divisions ruin the whole beautiful thing. Bullets are taken, brain-slicings are suffered, and hearts are broken all over the place.
PHOTOS: See our gallery of flick pics from X-Men: First Class
Say that it's mere "brotherhood" or "friendship" if you will. But when the Bad Thing (sob) happens at the end ofX-Men: First Class, Erik doesn't respond exactly like a buddy. He passionately drops 500 missiles, clutches Charles to his chest, homicidally freaks out at everyone else on the beach and then basically proposes marriage ("I want you by my side")?all while looking like hewants to killhimself.
They are in love, and that's that.
Theyshouldbemarried and living happily ever after, but Erik's rage issues make him an unsuitable daddy for the X-babies, so Charles divorces him on the beach, and they'll spend the rest of their lives in miserable devotion to each other, facing each other from across the line, instead of living together in Westchester mansion splendor, "playing chess" until they too old and creaky to "move the pieces."
In the end, adding the romantic throughline to the film is a masterstroke. The "X-Men: First Love" approachelevates the otherwise absurd comic-book goings-on. And the narrative heft of the storied mutant war to come elevates the potentially trite romantic arc.
For that matter, the romance somewhat rationalizes the random insertion of the Cuban Missile Crisis plotline. Professor Earnest observes, "It's the decade of the Civil Rights Movement and Stonewall, so the cultural backdrop is custom-ordered to support a burgeoning, forbidden love affair. And certainly their relationship mirrors these struggles.
"The ?60s were also the height of the Cold War, which of course provides the historical template for the storyline. In addition, the Cold War gives us an additional metaphor for star-crossed love. Here are two men who have much in common and, deep down, rather fancy one another. You'd think they'd hit it off famously?and for awhile they do. But eventually political differences drive them apart. Not entirely unlike theUnited Statesand the Soviet Union."
Fassbender, McAvoy and Vaughn all deserve special credit for their individual collective contributions to the achievement that is this film. Vaughn deftly centers the story on Erik and Charles' relationship while making sure the fanboys also have plenty to play with. Fassbender absolutely kills it as an emotionally wrecked abuse survivor whose romantic principles are something like "Cruel to be kind, means that I love you." McAvoy, meanwhile, deftly keeps Charles' fluttering (and later broken) heart in his eyes, as the future superhero follows that well-trodden path of falling for a hot bad boy whose powers and flaws are both terribly grand and terribly dangerous.
The smouldering "bromance" inX-Men: First Classis wall-to-wall coded passion?and sometimes not so coded?and if you think they're not having sweaty mutant sex during the entire movie, you just weren't paying attention. To clear up any confusion, we recommend you go see it again...and again...and again, just to catch the finer points. (Not least because higher box-office returns mean increased chances of a sequel.)

Joe Jonas made a stop at the Real Radio and Key 103FM radio stations in Manchester, England. He wore his favorite pants of the moment, his J Brand Trooper Cargos in Vintage Westpoint. This is a good look on Joe. I think he should stick to looks like this more often. Maybe I?m just mesmerized by the Commes des Garcons tee. Every time he wears it, his looks are just great.
Joe recently released his solo video. I haven?t seen the full video or heard the song, but the clips of it look like a pretty emotional record. Have any of you heard it? I hear it is about an ex. So that might explain the drama of the song. You can click here to purchase these pants at Singer22 $231.

OMG, you guys! It was the finale!
The Voice picked who became?well, "the Voice"?winner of $100,000 and a contract with Universal Records.
Ballin'!
So who took it all?!
MORE: The Voice: Four Finalists Fight to Become the Last One Singing
Of course they didn't announce it right off the bat, they had an hour to fill?duh!
So to take up some time, the four finalists Dia Frampton, Javier Colon, Beverly McClellan and Vicci Martinez each sang a duet with one of their favorite artists.
Jealous!
Before hitting the stage with their idol, each contestant had a "look-back" at their journey, which of course got us a little teary (we're not ashamed).
But then it was showtime!
Pat Monahan from Train joined up with Vicci from Cee Lo Green's team and sang "Drops of Jupiter." Cee Lo said it best when he claimed that Vicci reminded him of other artists, but there's no one that reminded him of Vicci because she's so unique.
From Adam Levine's team, Javier joined the stage with the legendary Stevie Nicks and performed "Changes." Levine tugged at our heart strings when he called Javier his hero.
Beverly from Christina Aguilera's team linked up with One Republic's Ryan Tedder and rocked out to "Good Life." Christina commended Beverly and then surprised the other coaches with a public thank-you for being the big brothers she'd never had. Awww!
Lastly, Dia represented Blake Shelton's team when she sang a duet to "House That Built Me," with her coach's wife, Miranda Lambert.
MORE: The Voice Contestants Make Us Cry as Half Are Sent Home
Of course, Papa Shelton made us get a tad emotional as he struggled to say that seeing Dia on stage with his wife made it clear that the contestant was family to him, and that was why he acted the way he did around her.
Double awww!
But enough heart to heart, who won the friggin' show?! We found out that it was a really close race, with the top two contestants only two percent away from each other in votes.
Who were they? Dia and Javier!
But when it came down to the wire, only one could take the title.
Congratulations to the first winner of The Voice, Javier Colon!
Yes, we cried.
Do you agree with America's choice? Sad that The Voice is over so soon? Sound off in the comments!

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver will split around $400 million, and legally it's supposed to be divided up 50/50, because we know there's no prenup.
TMZ broke the story Friday that Maria filed for divorce and the division of property is yet to be determined. Because there is no prenup, under California law, all earnings and other property acquired during the marriage is considered community property, which means a 50/50 split.
Arnold's worth is estimated at $300 million, while Maria's is around $100 million. Since the couple has been married for a quarter century and it's probably impossible to separate what they each had before they tied the knot, it's likely the entire pot of money will be considered community property.
But here's the twist. This divorce will never go to trial. It is going to settle out of court, and nothing requires Arnold and Maria to agree on a 50/50 split. Typically in these cases, there's a lot of horse trading ... Maria gets this house, Arnold gets that one, etc.
Maria's lawyer, disso-queen Laura Wasser, and Arnold's attorney, Bob Kaufman, will be hashing out the property settlement agreement -- probably for months.
One final point. We will never know the terms of the final property settlement agreement, because it's going to be confidential. Standard operating procedure for high-profile divorces.

She went on to say, ?I?m lucky enough to live in a country that gives me an equal right to my schooling: I?ve never had to contend with the kind of prejudice and sexual discrimination women in these countries deal with every day,? she says. ?My education has been so empowering, and has given me such stability and independence, and the idea of giving other girls the opportunities I have been lucky enough to have makes me very happy.?

Uh-oh. Maybe this hasn't nearly been as amicable as we all thought!
As we all know, Ashlee Simpson has been spotted out and about with a few different men since her split from Pete Wentz, and apparently, it's all on purpose - just to make him jealous!
A source reveals:
"She's trying to upset him."
Rude! But hey, if the reports that she's guzzling down booze like it's water are true, then she definitely may be acting out right now!
Either way, it's not good!
Somebody get her some help before the behavior starts to escalate!
You can't pull this shiz when you have a CHILD, gurl!

"It was a very special week for us all," the country songstress, 28, wrote of their vacation, which was in celebration of her husband's birthday and Father's Day, on her blog. "It takes a lot for us all to relax and shut off because we all have so many responsibilities, but for this one week, life was easy and perfect."
Growing up, Rimes said she never went on family getaways because money was tight leading up to her parents' divorce. But lesson learned: "This past week has taught us all in our family to make enjoying more time with each other the first priority in our lives," she explained. "You never know what tomorrow may bring."

www.bipolaradvantage.com What is unfortunate today is that far too many people continue to cling to the old belief that it is impossible to live a full life with a mental condition. On the other hand, a growing group of people are beginning to consider a life that is not restricted to a narrow range of experience. I look forward to the day when we all rise above the ignorance that keeps us in fear and denial of a better life. Bipolar In Order is based on a very simple premise we can learn and grow to the point that we see our condition as an advantage in our lives. Because this concept is often difficult for many people to accept on blind faith alone, I encourage everyone to simply begin by accepting that this new perspective is possible. To make this perspective a reality requires persistence, determination, and commitment. If you will give this perspective a chance, you will prove it in your own life. There are so many examples of bipolar ?disorder? that it is easy to understand why so many people try to avoid it instead of facing it and getting it under control. We can choose to view depression, mania, hallucination, and delusion from at least two different perspectives?either as ?disorder? or as ?in order.? Knowing that we have a choice of perspectives leads us to the understanding that we do not have to accept a diminished life. We begin to see what bipolar can be if we get it ?in order? instead of trying to make it go away. For me, Bipolar In Order is the greatest ?
The world according to Paris Hilton got more serious today.
Hilton home intruder Nathan Lee Parada was sentenced to two years in state prison today. Parada was found guilty of felony attempted first degree burglary April 29 for attempting to break into Hilton's house last August.

During the trial, LAPD officer Det. Kevin Romine testified that he conducted a 40 minute recorded interview with Parada after he had been apprehended. He said that during that interview, Parada told him he came in from Redlands and went straight to Hollywood where he bought a star map on the street. He said it was Parada's intent to "get money to go live on a deserted island". Parada told him he came prepared and had bought two knives?one at Big 5 and one at Target.
In his closing arguments Parada's attorney Juan Perez tried to argue that this case was only being prosecuted as felony because "Princess" Paris, as he called her, was the victim. D.A. Kaveh Faturechi emphasized, though, that Parada was there to get money and jewelry and came armed to the house with two knives.
Parada told Det. Romine he was not interested in meeting Hilton, but that he knew "she was famous and she was from a rich family." Parada also told the detective he was prepared if anyone was home to tie them up and to put something in their mouths, if needed to quiet them. Parada told Det. Romine he hit Hilton's window with the back end of one of the knives to try and break it.
Both Paris and now ex-boyfriend Cy Waits testified at the trial. Waits told the jury when he saw Parada holding knives, "I drew the gun on him and I screamed at him to drop the knives." Waits said at the time Paris was frantic running around the house looking for a phone.
Waits also testified that when they got downstairs, they saw Parada "with a smirk in his face" looking in the window. Waits said he went outside and asked him who he was. "I was polite in the beginning," but when Parada began to walk away from him, "He turned around and smirked and that is when I saw he had two large knives, a large steak knife and a large buck knife."
A jury took less than an hour to convict 32-year-old Parada.

Summertime, and the livin' is easy?though you'll have to wait for colder weather to see a certain American classic "reimagined" on Broadway. It was announced Wednesday that The Gershwins' Porgy And Bess will begin previews at the Richard Rodgers Theatre Dec. 17, with an opening slated for Jan. 12. The production ? based at Cambridge, MA's American Repertory Theater, where it will run August through October ? will star Audra McDonald and Norm Lewis as the titular couple, with David Alan Grier as Sportin' Life. A press release describes the show as "specifically created for Broadway" ? the original Porgy And Bess is essentially an opera, though it has been staged on Broadway a few times ? and "will feature a revised book in a musical-theatre format and jazz-oriented musical arrangements."

The couple married at the 18th-century church in the grounds of Stapleford Park Hotel, Leicestershire on Thursday, witnessedy by 200 relatives and friends.
Abbey wore a strapless Giles Deacon gown for the ceremony and, in an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction, the 5ft 9in model accidently showed off her right nipple as she stretched up to kiss the 6ft 7in footballer.
Peter, 30, and Abbey, 25, started dating six years and daughter, Sophia Ruby, was born in March.
