2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid to hit U.S. dealers in November
Filed under: Car Buying, Hybrid, Performance, SUV, Porsche, Luxury
Only a few more days remain before the arrival of the 2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid. It'll carry a $21,000 premium over the plain-Jane V6 Porsche Cayenne, but for your $67,700 you'll hold onto the performance and gain a helping of frugality. The supercharged, 333-horsepower six-cylinder with battery help does 0-to-60 in 6.1 seconds and 25 miles per gallon is the highway return. Plus, you get a max speed of 37 mph in electric operation and all that instant torque. You'll find more info in the press release after the jump, and your checkbook is probably on your dresser if you're ready to do this dance right now.

Motor Trend sneaks a ride in Ken Okuyama's K.O 7 Roadster
Filed under: Concept Cars, Convertible, Performance, Specialty
We were awestruck by this car at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show and have been thinking about it ever since. We've wondered aloud what it would be like to drive designer Ken Okuyama's beautiful K.O 7 Roadster, and now, thanks to Motor Trend, we have an idea. The buff book recently got to spend some time with Mr. Okuyama and the 1,740-pound topless sportscar.
The K.0 7 Roadster is powered by a 210-horsepower, 1.8-liter Toyota 2ZZ-GE engine, which has been bored out to a full 2.0 liters. In their testing, M/T recorded a 0-60 time of five seconds flat. More importantly, they also state that the butterfly-doored bantamweight is "heroic in the twisties" and is more fun to drive than a Lotus Elise R, a car with which the K.0 7 shares modified underpinnings.
The former Design Director for Pininfarina, Ken Okuyama is part of the team that brought us the Ferrari Enzo as well as the Maserati Quattroporte and Birdcage Concept. The K.0 7 Roadster is Okuyama's vision of melding the craftsmanship and precision found in fine watches with the heart and soul of a lightweight sportscar. Okuyama is only looking to build a few of these per year, but at a price of around $240,000, the K.0 7 was never going to be a mass-production piece. Low-volume also means flexibility, however, and Okuyama admits he is looking at even more powerful engines from Cosworth, or perhaps the powertrain from the dearly departed Honda S2000.

Scion's 2010 SEMA lineup: Sneak Peek
Filed under: Aftermarket, SEMA Show, Etc., Scion, Design/Style
Scion invited us to its art gallery in Culver City, California last night, for a chance to preview part of the lineup it's bringing to SEMA this year. Parked out front was an xB that was transformed into a limo by Cartel Customs. The concept of a Scion xB limo sounds ridiculous, but in person it's ridiculously awesome. Rear suicide doors open to a comfortable environment outfitted with a large television, bar and wrap-around sofa. It's far cooler than your run-of-the-mill Town Car. The limo was just the beginning, though, because inside four more vehicles were waiting.
A Scion xB-turned-mobile DJ booth, which we had seen a year earlier at the 2009 SEMA show, was the perfect custom vehicle to see of the mood inside the Scion Gallery. Two sporty 2011 tCs were parked near each other, one by GReddy and the other by Crawford Performance, while another xB was parked across the room. This Scion xB is called the Salty Dog and it was customized by the U.S. Navy, as part of Scion's Battle of the Builds. The Marines, Army and Navy all put together cars and the winner will be crowned in Vegas.
This collection represents just a portion of what Scion has in store for us at SEMA. We have information on the entire product lineup they will be showcasing, as well as shots from the event and a gallery of all the cars for you after the jump.

Barring a last-minute hitch, it looks like Ford and Mazda will soon be severing the ties that have bound them for the last four decades. Though the U.S. maker has yet to issue a formal confirmation, it's negotiating a deal that would have it sell off most or all of the remaining 11 percent stake it holds in its Japanese affiliate.
And, perhaps most importantly, they'll likely curb future product development programs that helped both companies squeak through the hard times of the not-too-distant past. One of the earliest examples of that alliance was the old Ford Escort, the U.S. maker's first attempt to build a so-called "world car."
More recent examples include the B-car platform that eventually went on to become both the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2. Conventional wisdom is that these are virtually identical subcompacts - but as I was reminded during back-to-back drives this past week, there's a surprising amount of difference between the American and Japanese production vehicles. Though they may have started out working together, the two companies soon branched off, yielding some surprisingly different results in terms of design and, more importantly, driving dynamics.

Kasey Kahne: 'It Was Time for Me to Move On'
Filed under: Brian Vickers, Kasey Kahne, NASCAR Rumors, Sprint Cup, Red Bull Racing, NASCAR
Discussing his abrupt departure from Richard Petty Motorsports this week, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kasey Kahne insisted Friday morning that it was a mutual decision. He dismissed reports that he was owed money from the team and challenged anyone to question his commitment despite the late-season split."It was time for me to move on,'' Kahne told reporters Friday morning at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, where he'll begin his tenure in the No. 83 Red Bull Toyota in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.
"It definitely went down differently than what a lot of people people expected, including myself. It's a big change for myself. I'm been doing the same thing for six and a half years. ... and now everything's different, but I'm looking forward to it. I've been looking forward to next year and now I've got a quicker start on it.
"I think it's good for me that it happened. And I think it's good for RPM also.''
Red Bull Racing general manager Jay Frye concurred and acknowledged the timing certainly benefited them as well. Kahne was already set to run the full 2011 season with the team before taking over the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in 2012. With one of Red Bull's lead drivers, Brian Vickers recovering from a blood clot, the No. 83 was available for Kahne now.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Sees a Glimmer of Racing Sunlight
Filed under: Dale Earnhardt Jr., Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR Fans, Sprint Cup, Danica Patrick, NASCAR
MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- The legions of fans of Junior Nation rose as one on lap 285 of the Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway Sunday, waving the little green flags passed out by the race sponsor and screaming their lungs out against the din of the more than three dozen race cars circling the half-mile track here.Their man, Dale Earnhardt Jr., had clawed his way to the front and taken the lead from Jeff Gordon during a green flag run at the midpoint of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race.
And he led 90 of the next 93 laps -- more than his total for the entire year before Sunday's race. Coming into Martinsville -- where Earnhardt has never won -- he had led a total of 71 laps in five races.
But after more than doubling his laps led total Sunday, Earnhardt was only partially satisfied. He faded during the long green flag run over the final 98 laps and finished seventh.
"Well, this isn't quite good enough," Earnhardt said. "We have to run way better than this. I can come in here and get a top-10 unless we have a major, major issue in the setup."

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG coming to LA Auto Show
Filed under: LA Auto Show, Sedan, Performance, Mercedes-Benz
Not long after Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off of the shapely new CLS-Class at this year's Paris Motor Show, sources within the automaker have told Autoblog that the AMG-fettled CLS will bow at next month's Los Angeles Auto Show.
Much like the revised S63 and CL63, expect the 2012 CLS63 AMG to use the automaker's new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8, churning out 544 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. That power will be managed via Merc's latest seven-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission sending power solely to the rear wheels. An AMG Performance Package will be on hand, as well, boosting output numbers up to 571 hp and 664 lb-ft. We can't wait to experience this beast firsthand.
Naturally, expect a bulgier, more aggressive exterior appearance complete with large AMG wheels and a host of LED lamps up front. Interior refinement will likely feature sport seats, a smaller-diameter steering wheel with paddle shifters and, of course, carbon fiber trim.
Stay tuned for official images and details closer to the car's official debut in Los Angeles.

Vegan Juice: PETA to advertise on EV charging stations?
It would seem that PETA expects electric car drivers to be those who'd rather go naked than wear fur... or something like that. In any case, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is urging the City of Boston to place ads with greenWhy Boston? The East Coast city has announced plans to install three electric vehicle chargers in busy metropolitan areas in the first quarter of 2011, which is part of an overall goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2020.
PETA has confirmed that the capital of Massachusetts isn't the only city that will be contacted. As other large U.S. cities roll out their own EV charging plans, they can apparently count on receiving similar unsolicited overtures from the animal rights group. Somehow, we have a feeling few if any municipalities will actually take up PETA on its suggestion - unless they're paying for the ads, of course.
